Historical Data

Okay, so I built out a new 5.5 vCenter. I currently have two 5.1 vCenters that vC Ops is monitoring/collecting data in. I will be transferring all hosts and guest from the two 5.1 vCenters. I know that adding the guests to the new vCenter will give them an new ID and that it will not match what is in vC Ops so the old data will be useless.

What I am thinking of doing is creating a new instance of vC Ops connected to the 5.5 vCenter then migrating my hosts/guests. My hope is I could then keep the old 5.1 vCenters and old vC Ops instance for a few months and see if I could see the historical data until the new instance has some data.

So, has anyone tried something like this? When I remove the guest from the old vCenter will that data get orphaned by vC Ops and become unsearchable? Just trying to think of a way to keep the historical data while also allowing myself to move forward. I will be bringing this up with VMware but curious if anyone here has tried something like this. Thanks in advance.
