CPU Ready vs Co Stop vs Contention vs Steal

We're running several hundred VM's on one of our clusters and have multiple business units managing servers at the OS level, running on these clusters. We have one business unit who runs their own monitoring software on their Windows Servers that is telling them the 'CPU Steal' is very high, and that it's an issue with the hosts having CPU contention. We manage the underlying infrastructure, so I'm trying to match vSphere metrics up with what they are reporting for relevance.

I'm not familiar with CPU Steal, but typically I would review the CPU Ready values of a VM experiencing CPU performance issues. With CPU Ready value < 5% there's nothing to worry about, general rule of thumb in my experience.

Looking at 1 particular VM (for example) with reported issues of high CPU Steal, CPU Ready is very low, 1.2% max peak however the CPU Co-Stop reached peaks of 250ms during these 1.2% ready peaks. If these 2 values indicate the same (or similar) information (VM vCPU is waiting to process on the hosts physical CPU) how can the values be so different?

Looking at the Max VM CPU Contention values from VROPS at the cluster level, it ranges from 4 to 16 - what is acceptable value for this metric?

Is there a way to add snapshot name and description to the view for  "virtual machines with snapshot"? I have not been able to add this to the view and cant seem to find the metric and or property in the Data tab..

Monitoring the vCenter appliances services from within VROPs 6.6

Hi guys,

We have had a lot of success monitoring services on VMs using the EPO agent on Windows machines.  We have issues with some of our 6.0 vcenters webservices going down while the fat clients continue to work.  I would like to monitor the webserver components for these appliance but I do not have a strong Linux background so I'm not sure what is entailed.  Does anyone happen to have a link to a step by step document?

Thanks,

Vcenter / PSC inventory report

Hi

I'm trying to get a report on all the Vcenter and PSC inventory.  Mostly importantly the version info and names.

I got the Vcenters to display from the vCenter adapter using the Vsphere World Object on the report.

It's not showing the PSCs.  Also I'd like to the Vcenter to show me something like .. vcenter 6.5 with external psc  ( if possible )

Also the relationship between the VC and PSC would be nice to see.

does the latest v6.6.1 vROps finally locate orphans/zombie vm's?

previous vrops versions did not so using esxi shell or powercli was best methods

it's interesting that the original version of the old vkernel tool which i had licensed for enterprise use in 2009 provided zombie info so i'm surprised that i've heard vROps does not do that?

I created some custom attributes on vCenter, where can I find these custom attributes when i create views on vrops?

solution adapter credential minimum permissions

What are the minimum permissions needed for an account used to connect to a target system for data collection? I found one KB article on how to create a specific role in vCenter, but what about systems like OneView, 3PAR, Horizon? Seems like they shouldn't need full admin, maybe just read-only? Running 7.5 if that matters. Thanks

Create a custom group of parents that have specific children

I am trying to create a custom group that contains all the vSwitch0 vSwitches, but only if they have a port group called "XYZ".

The group membership criterias seem to allow to check from the perspective of the switch only (if it's a child of something, has a specific parent etc...).

It works if I do the other way around (port groups named XYZ with parents of vSwitch0), but that returns the list of port groups not switches.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

This is to exclude certain symptoms/alerts for vSwitch0 that have iSCSI port groups defined on them...

Thanks for your time!

How to provide "aggregate" view of customized datastore super matrix ?

Hi everyone,

I  just create a simple super matrix for Datastore utilization on those individual datastore ( i.e. Used space / Total space ) .

image1.jpg

If I used the default generic scoreboard / dashboard, basically it will just display each individual datastore utilization %  in an "per datastore view".

image2.jpg

My cluster is having many datastore and listing all individual datastore util % is not going to help me to get a high level picture.

I want to show it as an "Average util % per cluster / per datacentre" level, how can I do that ?

Thx.

Bgds,

Gordon

vROPS configuration for workload placement in vRA

$

Hello All,

Does anybody try to make vROPS configuration for workload placement with vRA ?

I'm trying to configure  it  but without sucess for now.

What i did :

- vROPS endpoint inside vRA ( collection is ok  and metric providers also)

- Select vROPS inside vRA placement policy

- add vRA adapter inside vROPS ( collection is ok )

- create a custom group ( to have a list of all esx inside one particular cluster ( Cluster_Lab) )

- create a policy

when i try to deploy a blueprint ( previously created, few month ago )  from vRA it doesn't go inside the specify cluster previously set.

Do i miss something to make it works ?

I followed those vmware documentations :

Configure vRealize Operations Manager for Workload Placement in vRealize Automation

&

Configure vRealize Automation for Workload Placement

Info : vRA and vROPS are  in 7.5 version

Thanks,

Default Period Length for Health Chart Widget

Anyone know of a way to change the default period length to display in a health chart widget for a custom dashboard. Current it is set to 7 days and we'd like to see it default to 30 days. Trying to avoid having consumers of the dashboard from having to change the period length.

Thanks!

VM workload is red zone on vROPs but the CPU usage and Demand utilization is 30-40%

VM workload is red zone on vROPs but the CPU usage and Demand utilization is 30-40%

We had an issue for few of the VMs where the CPU usage and demand ( % ) are normal but the VM workload shows in red zone.

Seems the VM was captured on busiest VM report.

My question , how can the VM workload shows in red zone even the CPU has more capacity.

I got the workload metric on vROPs.

Example attached one sample VM details

the VM is part of over provisioned VM , it is captured on red zone ( workload %)

CPU capacity : 67 GHz

Usage: 6.73 GHz ( 10% of total capacity )

Demand: 6.76 GHz

Search filed is not returning any virtual desktops

We are trying to troubleshooting poor performance in a few of vdi desktops in one particular pool. We would like look at metrics per desktops and each time search for a particular desktops using the main search field in vrops manager or in the virtual desktop field in the helpdesk dashboard no desktops are returned. Any reason why the search function is not returning desktop? Any help would be appreciated.

VROPS 6.7 : Unable to do capacity planning anymore

Hi,

I made a big mistake : i didn't read the realease note about vrops 6.7. So i upgraded, and after few days, as everything works as it should, i removed the snapshoot.

But i didn't check very well about my capacity planning and the automation in VM placement.

Now, i'm in 6.7, this new version offers some good ehancement, but how to do the capacity planning ?

I used to have Cluster policy according 80% or 50% [DRP cluster] of the usable capacity. But now, the capacity usable is stuck to 100%.

The HA and buffer disapperead. Now, if i listen to VROPS, my clusters are well optmized, but i know that it's not the case. The acceptable limit for running VM is near, but vrops tell me , no problem.

I also use Turbonomic which tell me to add Hosts in cluster.

So how do you do ?

I need to provide a simple KPI to the management to monitore if investement are needed. Now, i'm unable to do it

vRealize Operations and Horizon Enterprise

$

Hello All,

I also cross-posted this in the Horizon forum as I don't know which would be better to ask.

I have a Horizon Enterprise deployment that I also deployed vRealize Operations on as well. My question is on the licensing portion of this.

I deployed vRealize 7.0.1 and have verified all of my keys are for version 7.x but I am not able to license vROps. I am able to license the Horizon management pack but every time I put in the Operation Manager license I get an "Invalid License" error.

I know there is a specific version of vROps for Horizon but it only goes to 6.6 and I asked around the vExpert slack group and was told that I didn't "have" to deploy that specific version and my license should work for 7.x.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Operations Manager and Predictive DRS license enforcement

Adding new licensed vSphere hosts to a cluster which is enabled with Predictive DRS (pDRS).   Do I need to add a VROPS license immediately to maintain pDRS functionality?   How will predictive DRS behave on a partially licensed cluster?
